Access Gmail Offline via Google Gears

Submitted by newgadgetsguru on January 28, 2009 – 6:48 pm2 Comments

offline-gmailGmail has introduced a new feature for their email today – offline mode. As the name implies, you will be able to browse your email and compose emails offline via this new feature. This is especially useful when you would need to look at your email archives or compose an email when on the the move like in an airplane or in a train. So basically you can access your Gmail anywhere, anytime on your favorite browser irrespective of whether you are connected to the internet or not.

How is this done? The secret lies in Google Gears. Google Gears downloads every piece of information on your email server to your harddisk (yes every email, every feature as well). This is stored for offline reading at your time of convenience. You could also compose new emails offline and it will be sent to the recipient once an internet connection is detected.

Just lookout for the Labs tab in your Gmail account. Once you see it, this is what you need to do:

1. Click Settings and click the Labs tab.
2. Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
3. Click Save Changes.
4. After your browser reloads, you’ll see a new “Offline0.1″ link in the upper righthand corner of your account, next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process and download Gears if you don’t already have it.

Let us know if you have tried it.
