Sony has announced the latest firmware upgrade for the PS 3 home console. The upcoming version 2.60 upgrade will offer users the ability to view digital photos via a new Photo Gallery application. Certainly not a revolutionary upgrade in terms of usage.

“The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection,” outlined Eric Lempel, director of PlayStation Network Operations.

The new application basically allows you to organize your digital photos more efficiently. Some of the categories include:

- Camera type
- Event date and time
- Colors in the photo
- Number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured

Other elements connected to the Photo Gallery application include the ability to put together slideshows set to music, and also the creation of individual photo playlists via an easy-to-use interface.

The upcoming v2.60 upgrade will also enable guest browsing on the PlayStation Network’s storefront and will add support for DivX 3.11 video playback. Has Sony run out of ideas?
