BMW testing intelligent GPS device – ILENA
The day when your car actually knows where you want to go even without you “telling” it might arrive sooner than you think. BMW is currently testing a GPS system called ILENA which registers a driver’s daily routes and riving patterns and uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to predict where the driver wants to go next even without entering the destination.
Here is an excerpt from bmwblog:
The system is called ILENA, short for Intelligent Learning Navigation and according to BMW, it intends to record your daily driving habits, in order to increase the efficiency of your car. No privacy issues are mentioned at this point, but such a navigation system could raise many new questions. The navigation system in most of the cars are already able to broadcast your location through the GPS installed in these cars, but I am not aware of the possibility of permanently recording your daily routes.
What this would mean is that this device would capture your every move much like an airplane’s blackbox. Although the site raises some privacy concerns, I don’t see why an option to not record a driver’s particular route cannot be provided. It definitely doesn’t seem like an invasion of privacy as it is used for convenience more than anything else. After all, if you are using a GPS device you are being tracked down by at least 3 satellites anyway. The same goes to your cell phone as well.
