Mofiria: Sony develops new finger-vein biometric system

Submitted by newgadgetsguru on February 2, 2009 – 9:55 pm2 Comments

mofiria-biometric-systemSony has developed a new kind of biometric system. It is called mofiria and it utilizes the patterns of veins for recognition rather than fingerprints. The biometric system relies on scattering infra-red light which is then recognized by a CMOS sensor. Mofiria is able to compensate for differently placed sensors and hence reduces the need for repositioning swipes which might be needed with traditional fingerprint biometric systems.

Sony is promising accuracies such as 0.01 percent for False Rejection Rate (FRR) and 0.0001 percent for False Acceptance Rate (FAR). The system has low processing demands and hence would not require a computing PC to be implemented. It could be well suited for mobile phone applications as well. Sony says that this system could be available sometime in 2009 or early 2010.
