“Wearable computer” not science fiction anymore

Submitted by newgadgetsguru on February 6, 2009 – 9:20 pm2 Comments

mit_wearable_projector_computer_prototypeA group of MIT students have actually managed to convert fiction to reality. They have actually demonstrated a wearable computer/projector which can be used with ease on any kind of surface. Its not the final product right now and a prototype was actually demonstrated at TED this week which is capable of projecting a watch face onto the user’s wrist after they trace a circle over it, capturing images framed by their fingers, and pulling up information about an individual and projecting it onto them during conversation.

Pranav Mistry leads the bunch of students at MIT for this project as part of the Fluid Interfaces group at MIT Media Lab. The prototype that they demonstrated consisted of a battery powered 3M pico projector , a cellphone and a webcam, together with four colored Magic Marker lids worn on the fingertips. You could take a look at the demo in the video we have provided in this post.

Apparently the entire setup costs less than $350. It is very possible for the cost to be substantially reduced once it is commercialized and mass produced.
