They offer from the overly feminine to the neutral colors for those that don’t really want any of that color nonsense mucking up their speakers. Sharp announces new A series HDTVs

Even in a time of economic uncertainty, Sharp seems to be constantly looking at improving their TV lineup. As usual they are making their debut in Japan before anywhere else in the world. There have been three HDTVs revealed – the LC-52AE6 at 52-inches, the LC-46AE6 at 46-inches and the LC-40AE6 at 40-inches.

Like any other electronics manufacturer, Sharp has decided to go “eco-friendly” as well – these TVs consume very little power. Some of the features include a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 120Hz de-judder tech, a digital TV tuner, 450 nits of brightness, 15,000:1 contrast ratio, stereo speakers, a viewing angle of 176 degrees and an ambient light sensor. The 40-inch model will be shipping on April 10th for the equivalent of $2,076. The 46- and 52-inch models will be shipping on May 15th for the equivalent of $2,698 and $4,048, respectively.

Nice TVs to have in my living room. But I don’t see any killer features here that will make me upgrade!

SmartQ’s HDTV player introduced

SmartQ has so far been launching portable media players and recently they seem to have set their sights on this HDTV player. Its basically a set top box which can be used to watch HD videos from their PC on their TV. The desktop set looks to have some serious power, normally such sets within China are geared for the HD RMVB playback, but this device will be able to play a multitude of HD video formats.

The device looks promising with features such as HDMI 1.3 and there’s also a pair of USB 2.0 ports for connecting external HDDs and the like. Unfortunately not much details are available except for those mentioned on the photo above. Certainly something to look out for!

Panasonic TV lets you play Air Hockey too!

Check out this cool 103 inch, $70K TV from Panasonic. Apart from letting you do boring stuff like watch TV, it also doubles up as a cool Air Hockey table. How you might ask – Multi Touch is the answer. It certainly looks like Multi Touch is pretty much making its way into all possible electronic gadgets these days.

U-Touch are the “culprits” this time in implementing this cool feature using Multi-Touch. They have practically converted the TV to receive ouchscreen input and the air-hockey software has been added by software house ui Centric. Certainly a wonderful waste of space and viewing pleasure, but then if you have a few bucks to burn you could possibly think of getting one for your game room.

For early technology adapters a word of caution – this is not on sale yet! You could watch this video on YouTube to satisfy your curiosity though!

Pioneer is exiting the HDTV business

Yes it’s true! Pioneer has been losing money due to its plasma TV business and generally from its HDTV business as well. Recently Pioneer closed down its manufacturing line for its plasma TVs. Due to the recent economic condition Panasonic (which is Pioneer’s outsourcing partner for its panels) has announced a delay to its new plasma factory would not be ready to 2010. It is also reported that Pioneer will be entering a joint venture with Sharp for its DVD player line as well. Let’s hope no other big players announce such news during this difficult time.

Eco friendly TVs from Sharp Aquos

Sharp has recently announced a new line of models for their Aquos D models. Nothing spectacular in terms of specifications – they are available in 32, 26 and 20” and resolution of 1366X768. In terms of contrast ratio, the 32″ model offers 3000:1 and the 26 and 20″ models offer 1500:1.

Moving away from the specifications, the interesting part is that Sharp is marketing these TVs are eco friendly! First of all, the power consumption of this TV is only 60W per year (we are assuming that it is in standby mode). That’s just 0.16W per day. That’s fantastic figures for something like an LCD TV. Sharp also says that the Aquos D’s LCD is built to last approximately 60,000 hours. It also user “greener” plastics which seems to be the trend nowadays.

New Philips TV provides real cinema experience

Philips has announced an all new widescreen TV called Cinema 21:9 will offer a super widescreen experience for customers. It promises to provide the same experience as going to the movies. At the moment this TV will come in a 56 inch model and will offer a 21:9 ratio screen. This means that movies shot in the 2.39:1 format will completely fill the screen.

As for movies in the more traditional 16:9 ratio, the TV will use an advanced formatting technology to fit the screen accordingly.

“We don’t have a TV suitable to viewing movies until now”, a spokesman said, trying to justify why you would want the new model from the company. Apparently this all new TV is going to change the way we watch TV in the living room. For those who have a big enough living room (and a wallet deep enough to match) this TV also will come with a 7.1 home cinema and blu-ray player as well. The Philips Cinema 21:9 is due to launch during Spring 2009.
