If you are one of the many people out there who keep running the twitter homepage or a desktop client while at work this might be the right solution for you – Twitlet. As the name implies it is a stripped down version of twitter itself and is very “light” on your browser. All it does is place a tiny bookmarklet on your browser window which you can click from time to time to send updates on twitter.

As with other twitter services, setting up twitlet is a breeze as well. All you need is your account info aka username and password and voila you are setup on twitlet. Once you have dragged and placed the bookmarklet on top of your browser, all you need to do it to click it and a window will pop up like the one shown in the figure. You are able to use the special #link or #this keywords to add URL links to the current webpage which you might have opened. The only drawback with twitlet is it is not recommended on a shared PC (like a shared desktop at work) as it might mean that your co-worker could get access to your twitter account. Who knows what might happen after that!

Gmail has introduced a new feature for their email today – offline mode. As the name implies, you will be able to browse your email and compose emails offline via this new feature. This is especially useful when you would need to look at your email archives or compose an email when on the the move like in an airplane or in a train. So basically you can access your Gmail anywhere, anytime on your favorite browser irrespective of whether you are connected to the internet or not.

How is this done? The secret lies in Google Gears. Google Gears downloads every piece of information on your email server to your harddisk (yes every email, every feature as well). This is stored for offline reading at your time of convenience. You could also compose new emails offline and it will be sent to the recipient once an internet connection is detected.

Just lookout for the Labs tab in your Gmail account. Once you see it, this is what you need to do:

1. Click Settings and click the Labs tab.
2. Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
3. Click Save Changes.
4. After your browser reloads, you’ll see a new “Offline0.1″ link in the upper righthand corner of your account, next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process and download Gears if you don’t already have it.

Let us know if you have tried it.

Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 is finally available to the public for download. There are quite a few changes and certainly look interesting.

Some features of note are:

* 3D preview during tab switch
* Better Javascript Performance
* Location awareness: it requires the Geode extension

One of the features that is absent is private browsing. Looks like we might have to wait a little longer for that. But other than that this updated browser from Mozilla certainly looks promising. You can download Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 and let me know how you liked it.

Yet, most of us don’t even have a proper software installed on our PCs to safeguard ourselves from such unauthorized activities. Comodo which strives to create trust among internet users has come up with the concept of Trusted Internet which makes the internet a much safer place.

Best of all, there are quite a lot of tools that are available for free on Comodo. I have listed some of the prevention software below.

Comodo Firewall Pro

This is able to prevent viruses, worms, spywares, keyloggers and other malwares from infecting your PC. This software has also been rated by PC magazine online as an editor’s choice.

Comodo Memory Firewall

This software helps to monitor your PC’s memory so that it doesn’t fall prey to buffer overflow attacks. Essentially it is able to prevent any suspicious code from executing and prevents data theft.

Comodo Verification Engine

How do you differentiate an authentic website from a phishing website? This software will definitely help you do that. All you need to do is to place your mouse over the website’s logo and if it displays a green border then it is an authentic website. Easy yet effective.

Comodo iVault

Another effective software to prevent data theft. This software encrypts your data and other confidential information and prevents them from falling prey to data theft and trojans. Also effective against keyloggers.

Comodo AntiSpam

Nobody hates Spam like this software does! It allows to create your own ‘approved’ list of senders and you will not have to worry about spam or junk email. This is especially useful for bloggers like me.
Comodo SecureEmail

Another encryption software but this one encrypts every email that you send out. Now you can be absolutely sure that no one else other than the intended recipient gets to read the content of your email. Excellent protection against identity theft.

Most of us spend many hours a day on the internet. But without the aid of such software like what Comodo offers, there is a high risk of identity theft and other malwares attacking your PC. So ensure that your PC and all your data is well protected. There are a whole lot of software tools available from Comodo and I would encourage you to check them out.

But sort of. Ok before I confuse you further, here’s the juicy story. Codeweavers, which is the company behind crossover office have released a version of Google Chrome for the Mac and Linux machines. It is called the crossover chromium and yeah you guessed it – not an official product from Google. But it will have to do for now?

When Google Chrome was released, there was a lot of disappointment that there wasn’t a version for Linux or Mac available. It looks like codeweavers have taken that into consideration (are you listening Google?) and come up with the crossover chromium. Word is that codeweaver chromium works on Intel Macs and not on Power PCs. Have you used it? What are your thoughts?

It was a very busy weekend with the family and I had to tie up some loose ends. Now that’s done and back to New Gadgets Guru. Did you know that Microsoft is going to release another version of Windows which is to be called Windows 7? Windows 7 Beta 1 is probably coming in December 2008.

Looking at the screenshot above, it seems to me that Windows 7 is going to look a lot like Windows Vista. I wonder why! Microsoft haters and lovers have been complaining about Vista right from day 1. But Microsoft has not paid attention to this and has tried to kill Microsoft XP in order to push for Microsoft Vista sales. It would have probably made sense for Microsoft Windows 7 to look like Windows XP. Anyway lets wait and see how the Beta 1 performs.
